Nakapagkolekta na ang Department of Health (DOH) ng swab samples sa mga COVID-19 patients sa ilang lugar sa National Capital Region (NCR) para sa isang ‘special run’ ng genome sequencing.
Layunin nitong makita kung gaano kalawak ang presensya ng South African variant ng COVID-19 sa bansa.
Ayon kay Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire, nagkaroon ng ‘purposive specimen collection’ sa Pasay at iba pang siyudad sa Metro Manila.
Aabot sa 140 specimens ang kanilang kinolekta para sa gene sequencing.
Sinabi ni Vergeire na ang South African variant ay may mataas na transmissibility tulad ng United Kingdom variant.
“This South African variant according to evidence and different publications would also have this higher transmissibility just like the UK variant. But another phenomenon that happens with this variant is yung tinatawag nila na it can affect the efficacy of the vaccine. That is why we would want to contain this as fast as we can,” ani Vergeire.
Noong Martes, kinumpirma ng DOH ang presensya ng South African variant sa bansa kung saan tatlo sa anim na kaso ay pawang mga resident ng Pasay City.
