Wala ng isasagawang lifestyle checks sa mga opisyal na pinaghihinalaang nagnakaw sa kaban ng bayan.
Ito ang iginiit ni Ombudsman Samuel Martires sa pagdinig ng Kamara hinggil sa ₱3.7 billion budget ng Office of the Ombudsman para sa susunod na taon.
Ayon kay Martires, ang nasabing hakbang ay “illogical.”
Nanawagan si Martires sa Kongreso na amyendahan ang Republic Act 6713 o Code of Conduct and Ethical Standards for Public Officials kung saan may ilang probisyon na hindi malinaw.
Sa digital age, sinabi ni Martires na hindi na naaayon ang ilang probisyon ng batas.
“We have to redefine what is living beyond your means. What is simple living to me may not be simple living to you or anyone,” giit ni Martires.
Mahalagang baguhin ang batas kung nais ng pamahalaan na mapuksa ang pinaka-ugat ng korapsyon.
“When I assumed office, I suspended the conduct of lifestyle checks because I have long doubted the provision of the law about it. I want to propose to Congress the amendments to Republic Act 6713 because the provisions there, malabo (are hazy), defies logic,” dagdag ni Martires.
Iginiit din ni Martires na hindi kailangan ng Statement of Assets Liabilities and Net Worth (SALN) para patunayang tiwali ang isang government official.
“In the Anti-Graft and Corrupt Practices Act, the SALN is not needed to prove undue injury, undue advantage, even plunder,” ayon kay Martires.
“For what purposed is SALN used? The SALN is only used to cast aspersions on government officials,” dagdag pa niya.
