ILIGAN CITY- Using fire truck and single drum compactor, twenty seven fully loaded boxes of substandard or uncertified Christmas lights in various brands and models with an estimated value of one hundred thousand pesos were completely destroyed.
The destruction took place at the Bureau of Fire Protection – Iligan Station premises during the launching of the Fire Prevention Month on 01 March 2017.
“Confiscated substandard mandatory products, like Christmas lights, should be destroyed to make sure that it will not be re-sold to the domestic market, and to somehow inform the public and the business community that the government is serious in protecting the consumers. Besides, as consumers, we have the right to safety.”, Provincial Director Ruel B. Paclipan clarified.
Spearheaded by the Department of Trade and Industry – Lanao del Norte Provincial Office and in coordination with the Local Price Coordinating Council (LPCC) of Iligan City, the Christmas lights were seized from local retailers in violation of Department Administrative Order 02 series of 2007- Defining the Responsibilities and Liabilities of Manufacturers, Importers, Traders, Wholesalers, Distributors, Retailers, Service Providers and or their Agents, with Regard to Products/Services Covered by Philippine Standard Certification Mark Schemes.
Christmas lights or lighting chains must meet the requirements of Philippine National Standard (PNS) 189:2000 which include affixing of authentic Import Commodity Clearance (ICC) stickers.
Penalties and sanctions in violation of DAO 02:2007 include cease and desist order, confiscation/destruction of goods, and administrative fine of not more than Php300,000.
