Isinusulong ni Pangulong Rodrigo Duterte na ihanay sa mga Pilipinog bayani si Lapu-Lapu.
Ito ay kasabay ng paglulunsad ng ₱5,000 commemorative banknote at silver medal.
Sa taped message sa seremonyang isinagawa sa Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas, ipinapakilala ni Pangulong Duterte ang commemorative items ni Lapu-Lapu at umaasang tularan ng mga Pilipino ang kanyang kabayanihan.
“I join the National Historical Commission of the Philippines and the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas as we launch the P5,000 commemorative banknote and medal. I am delighted to see Lapu-Lapu and the warriors of Mactan as well as the majestic Mt. Apo and the great Philippine eagle being featured in these commemorative items,” sabi ni Pangulong Duterte.
“Indeed, if we are to apply to truly celebrate our rich history as a nation, we need to elevate Lapu-Lapu to a greater standing among the pantheon of Filipino heroes. We, therefore, dedicate this bank note and this medal to his historical victory in Mactan 500 years ago,” dagdag pa ng Pangulo.
Ang paglalabas ng special banknote at medal ay bahagi ng quincentennial commemorations ng Pilipinas kabilang ang 500th anniversary ng tagumpay ni Lapu-Lapu sa Battle of Mactan.
Si Lapu-Lapu, isang chieftain sa Mactan Island na lumaban at pumaslang kay Ferdinand Magellan na nanguna sa Spanish invading forces noong 1521.
