Dick Gordon: Red Cross will answer call of help by Hospicio De San Jose as more than 30 patients tested positive

Answering the appeal made by Hospicio de San Jose, the Philippine Red Cross (PRC) will transport more than three dozen patients and will open its isolation facility. This quick action is PRC Chairman and CEO Senator Dick Gordon’s response to a call for help made by the hospice’s Administrator Sr. Maria Socorro Evidente, DC.

Sister Evident contacted Sen. Dick Gordon last August 28, 2021, to request PRC to open its isolation facility to cater to COVID-19 positive individuals of the oldest welfare institution in the country. As of press time, 34 already tested positive for COVID will be transferred by PRC from Hospicio to its facility in Adamson University.

The letter asking for help indicated, that there are 108 active cases and 30 more people to be tested and classified as close contacts. Sen. Dick Gordon immediately mobilized PRC to open the Adamson facility and cater to children and the elderly of Hospicio de San Jose.

“Kailangan natin agad tugonan ang mga matatanda at mga bata ng Hospcio de San Jose dahil isa sila sa mga most vulnerable groups sa ating bansa. Sa dumarami na kaso ng COVID-19, ay kaagad natin ipinabukas ang isolation facility natin sa Adamson upang mabigyan ng maayos na atensyong medical na apektado ng COVID-19,” Sen. Gordon said.

The PRC isolation in Adamson University that opens today will provide a Doctor and a Nurse to ensure the wellbeing of the patients.

PRC recently conducted vaccination through the bakuna bus at Hospicio de San Jose, inoculating over 150 senior citizens, bed-ridden clients, persons with comorbidities, and health care workers.

Letter of Hospicio to Sen.Gordon

Dear Senator Dick,

I am Sr. Maria Socorro Evidente, DC, Administrator of Hospicio de San Jose. I don’t know if you can still remember our good old days of partnership while I was assigned in Olongapo St. Joseph Community Center from 1988-1995. And my nephew and cousin were in your executive staff.

First of all I would like to thank you for the vaccine that Red Cross made available to around 150 of our residents and employees here at Hospicio some weeks ago. Thanks to that, by now we have 262 fully vaccinated. We deeply appreciate your offer for vaccination because we waited so long for City Hall to accede to our request for same service. Only our children are not yet vaccinated and around 20 employees who were sick at the time of vaccine.

I come to you with a very urgent request. I guess you must have heard by now that Hospicio has many COVID positive cases, up to date we still have 108 active cases with 17 recoveries. We were informed by our Vincentian brothers that their Adamson facility was reserved for Red Cross COVID mild cases. Please Senator, grant our appeal to open this facility for our use because it is near to us so we can transfer some of our active cases and decongest our quarantine facility here, while readying it again for possible new cases, which we pray would not happen, but today we still have 30 more to be tested as PUIs with symptoms. Our TAHAN Center and Immaculate Heart of Mary Building is filled with patients,, so our elderly ( 31 of them) and our children were just quarantined in their respective dormitories/rooms because all of them turned positive of COViD. Now, if you can allow us to use the Adamson facility and provide us with a doctor and nurse we would like to transfer some of our employees. able-bodied elderly and children there. We can provide two caregivers perhaps to relieve your nurse. PLEASE……..We want to provide our patients with a better room conducive for their healing. Many concerned citizens have been concerned about our present facilities whether it is conducive for healing. Hence, we would really appreciate the service of Red Cross doctor and nurse if some of our patients can be transferred to Adamson facility. We can fill up the 18 rooms with 54 cases.

Thanks so much for a positive response to our urgent need. Our Vincentian brothers in San Marcelino are just waiting for a go signal from you. We can provide food for our patients since our driver can easily deliver it due to the short distance.
In the name of Jesus and Mary, God bless you

Sr. Maria Socorro Pilar G. Evidente, DC ( Sr. Corrie)
Administrator
Hospicio de San Jose
