I grew up watching the NBA from half a world away, which meant plenty of mornings spent following the league through a television screen. For two days in Makati City, NBA House Philippines brought some of the league’s sights, sounds, history, and spectacle much closer to home.
The first-ever NBA House Philippines presented by Gatorade transformed SPACE at One Ayala into a basketball playground on Aug. 29 and 30, filling a full-sized court and the surrounding areas with interactive games, memorabilia, merchandise, performances, and some iconic basketball faces.
Over the weekend, I got to test my shot, stand inches away from the Larry O’Brien Trophy, watch Hall of Famers up close, and see the same court shift from basketball clinics to exhibition games and live music performances.
Here are six things that made the first NBA House Philippines an experience to remember.
1. The NBA House Welcome
It felt fitting that NBA House made its Philippine debut in a country where basketball rarely needs an introduction.
That local touch was obvious from the entrance, which welcomed fans with the iconic jeepney that transported us into a hoops haven.
A full-sized court anchored the space, surrounded by basketball-themed activity areas, merchandise, memorabilia, and other attractions.
It did not feel like an exhibit you were supposed to quietly walk through.
The idea was to get involved.
2. The Ultimate Fan Playground
Almost every corner offered a different way to immerse in the authentic NBA experience.
Fans could take on a giant Connect Four shooting game, measure their vertical jump, try the newest basketball video game on consoles, personalize caps, browse sneakers and apparel, take photos with NBA installations, and even jump into human and miniature claw games.
One interactive wall challenged fans to see whether they could block shots from NBA players.
Naturally, I had to try guarding ArenaPlus ambassador Jordan Clarkson. My defensive rating is probably better left unpublished.
3. A Walk Through NBA History
Some parts of NBA House were better appreciated at a slower pace.
The memorabilia area featured signed basketballs, framed jerseys, and pieces from different eras of the league, including a Los Angeles Lakers championship banner from their 2009-10 title run.
Then there was the Larry O’Brien Championship Trophy, the piece of hardware every NBA team spends an entire season chasing.
Nearby, the pop-up NBA Store offered iconic jerseys and official event merchandise, making that corner of the venue feel equal parts museum and fan shop.
For someone who grew up following the league from thousands of miles away, seeing some of that history up close was easily worth slowing down for.

Then Tony Parker, Jason Kidd, and Lauren Jackson started appearing around the venue.
While watching basketball history on TV was memorable, seeing Hall of Famers walking around and interacting with fans was a surreal experience, especially for someone who grew up watching players like Kidd and Parker make history during early-morning NBA broadcasts.
Parker and Jackson also headlined basketball clinics, passing some of their experience on to the next generation of players.
Special video appearances from Alex Eala and Clarkson, two of the most recognizable Filipino athletes today, added another local connection.
NBA House made basketball history feel less distant.
For once, fans were not just watching it through a screen.
5. ArenaPlus on the NBA House Court
ArenaPlus had its own Shootout Challenge, where fans chased a leaderboard for a chance to take home prizes.
The objective was straightforward: make your shots, put up a score, and see how long your name could survive near the top.
Things became considerably more intense on the main court.
ArenaPlus also held “Trivia Face-Off Challenge,” an on-court trivia challenge that put contestants under the lights to find out how well their basketball knowledge was.
Between the stage, the crowd, and the pressure of committing to an answer in front of everyone, it became much more than a regular trivia game.
It was also one of the moments that best captured NBA House: fans were not there merely to spectators – they got to live out their basketball dreams and personally experience the NBA atmosphere.
6. Center Court: Where the Action Happened
The court was where NBA House came closest to recreating the energy of an actual game day.
Across two days, it hosted basketball clinics, on-court activities, basketball challenges, and exhibition games with fans packed around the floor.
Day 1 featured Team Parker against Team Kidd in the Celebrity Showcase, bringing Filipino athletes, entertainers, and personalities together with two NBA legends on opposing sides.
Day 2 kept the competition going with the “Don’t Sleep” All-Star Game, featuring a combination of collegiate standouts as well as local and international professional players.
The Sacramento Kings Dancers added another familiar NBA touch, helping bring authentic NBA entertainment to Manila in between the action on the court.
Then basketball gave way to music.
P-pop acts KAIA and SB19 performed on Day 1 before Bad Indie Eye, Nicole Anjela, Waiian and Lola Amour wrapped up the two-day spectacle on Sunday.
At the end of the event, the same court had hosted youth clinics, trivia, exhibition games, dancers, and live music – a weekend celebration of Philippine basketball culture.
That probably summed up NBA House Philippines best.
